The first place $5,000 scholarship was awarded to West Central Valley High School senior, Allison Wilson for her project, “Ethanol Production from Bluestem Grass.” The Energy Center awarded a second place $2,500 scholarship to Paden Roder from South O’Brien High School for his project, “The PiezoKey: A Novel Invention that Utilizes Flangial Motion and the Piezoelectric Effect in Computer Keyboards to Provide an Alternative Source of Energy.” This is the first year a student from South O’Brien High School received a Youth and Energy Scholarship. Central Lee High School’s Jamilee Lightfoot received a $1,250 scholarship for her project, “Pond Scum: Power Plant of the Future.” The Energy Center created the scholarship program in an effort to encourage Iowa students’ interest in energy issues. Over the last nine years the Energy Center has awarded $79,625 in scholarships to 31 students from 11 Iowa high schools. The Energy Center’s scholarships are used to help pay tuition and fees at the college or university of the student’s choice. If he or she should choose to attend an Iowa school, an additional $500 is added to the award. The Iowa Energy Center is dedicated to improving Iowa’s energy efficiency and use of renewable energy through research, demonstration, and education.
