Hybrid Thermal/Biological Conversion to Industrial Chemicals
Principal Investigator: Robert C. Brown, Iowa State University
Pyrolysis is similar to gasification but is done in the complete absence of
oxygen causing the feedstock to convert to a liquid or biocrude (also called
pyrolysis syrup.) The biocrude created through pyrolysis is ripe for further
testing and refining In particular, levoglucosan, an anhydrosugar obtained
from biocrude, is being investigated as a feedstock for production of ethanol,
polyols and other fermentation products used throughout the biorefinery process.
