 Youth and Energy Scholarships
The Iowa Energy Center awards Youth and Energy Scholarships for exceptional energy-related projects entered in the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa held in Ames each Spring. Over the last 12 years, the Energy Center has awarded a total of $98,375 in scholarships to 38 students from 12 Iowa high schools.
Energy-related projects can fall under many of the science fair’s listed categories. From engineering and physics, to botany and earth sciences, energy plays a role. The Iowa Energy Center encourages students to put gray cells to work exploring the diverse world of energy.
Three scholarships are awarded:
- First place award = $5,000
- Second place award = $2,500
- Third place award = $1,250
Scholarship funds will be provided directly to the college of the student’s choice. An additional $500 will be awarded to students who attend an Iowa college, university or community college. Students may win more than one Youth and Energy Scholarship, but the amount of the awards cannot exceed $10,000. Scholarship funds may not be used to pay for books, supplies and room/board.
Projects will be judged on the following criteria:
- Accuracy and completeness of information
- Creativity of idea or application
- Ability to communicate and demonstrate energy information effectively.
