The work at BECON focuses on Iowa’s agriculture products and the biomass fuels and chemicals contained in them.

Feedstocks available in Iowa

  • Agriculture residues: cornstover, oat and wheat hulls
  • Food processing wastes: bone meal and rendering plant fats
  • Livestock production wastes
  • Obsolete seed corn
  • Wood waste

Two types of conversion systems for biomass feedstocks

  • Biological conversion, using bacteria to convert the biomass
  • Thermal chemical conversion, using heat and chemicals to convert the biomass
