Finances

The Energy Center receives core funding from an assessment on the intrastate revenues of Iowa’s gas and electric utilities. The assessment funds are used to support energy research, demonstration and education programs as well as staff salaries and operation expenses related to the Energy Center’s legislated mission.

The Energy Center's fiscal year runs July 1 - June 30.

FY 2006 Expenditures

For fiscal year 2006, the Energy Center received just over $3.1 million from the utility assessment. For this reporting period, the Energy Center spent $3.2 million, 70% of which was provided directly to research and education projects.

FY 2006 Grant Program Funding Commitments

The Energy Center issues competitive grants under two broad categories: energy efficiency and renewable energy. More than $2.1 million was spent on competitively funded research during fiscal year 2006. The Energy Center share of that research investment was $1.45 million.

Leverage Through Collaborative Research

With each investment ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, the Energy Center provided $70,000 toward three national research collaborations. These modest sums provided Iowa with access to practical research, training materials and energy-efficiency information. The total investment in these projects, from all other national collaborators, was about $465,000.

Sponsored Research Funding Received

To address needs in specific technical areas, the Energy Center occasionally seeks external research funding. During fiscal year 2006, the Energy Center received $344,956 in research funding from federal, state and private sponsors. These funds augment the assessment funds and enable the Energy Center to conduct targeted research of benefit to Iowans.
